In 1969 when I lived in Cornwall and was just 17 years old, I managed to buy a copy of Practical Electronics in WH Smiths in Plymouth. I sat on Plymouth Hoe, transfixed by the Communications Receiver article. Never before had I seen anything like it; the RSGB were 40 years behind and I had not yet heard of the ARRL. The concept of upconversion was blindingly new and the use of a high current solid state front end was years ahead of its time, certainly for amateurs. Years passed and I became a Senior Design Engineer for Philips, specialising in receivers. Later I started Timestep and we sold over 1,000 2M monitor receivers into the amateur community. Timestep later became the largest supplier of Weather Satellite systems in the World, and still is. I often wondered about that receiver and, as the Internet progressed, I searched for it every 6 months or so. But nothing, nothing at all, until last month when a search found the index of those very issues of Practical Electronics, here at The Cool Book Shop, and I was then able to buy them off eBay! I had begun to think I had imagined it all. At conferences I had asked receiver designers if they had read them; no one, and the entire Internet had ever heard of this, until now!
